Kristy Moreno's Ceramic Sculptures Exude Female Empowerment

Catch her latest solo show, ‘The Company We Keep’, at OCHI gallery in LA.

Exhibitions

Kristy Moreno is a Mexican-American artist based in Los Angeles who specializes in creating intricate ceramic sculptures that comment on both her Latinx experience, as well as alluding to a fictional decolonized world that is free of systemic injustices. Born in Inglewood and having moved down south to Orange County, Moreno’s aesthetic is informed by her personal history, as well as the visual lexicon that has come to define Southern California.

The Company We Keep is the artist’s first solo show with LA-based gallery OCHI and comprises of a series of hand-made sculptures that blend SoCal Latinx culture with the fashion sensibilities of the 1990s girl power movement. Each ceramic vessel and wall work is made of clay and depicts female protagonists that express an air of confidence. Moreno’s fashionistas contain subtle references from personal and shared histories — from Chicanx lowrider culture and her mother’s wardrobe from the ’80s to the fashion staples of the following two decades.

“We all have an innate need and desire for human connection,” note Moreno in a past interview, “and when we learn how embracing others challenges patriarchy, we can then start community building.” The exhibition will be on view at OCHI in LA until February 10.
