Chinese Artist Chen Ke Honors the Women of the Bauhaus in New Print

Produced ito coincide with her ongoing solo exhibition at Perrotin Paris.

Chen Ke has released a new limited edition screenprint in collaboration with Perrotin. The artwork follows her ongoing solo exhibition, Bauhaus Gal – Theatre, currently on view at the gallery’s Paris location.

The show takes its inspiration from a photograph the Beijing-based artist observed of a group of girls studying at the Bauhaus school in Germany. “They lived 100 years ago, but they’re not so different from women nowadays,” noted Ke in a past interview. “They might be more avant-garde and courageous.” Despite commonly being associated as one of the most radical and free-thinking art schools over the past 100 years, the Bauhaus still played into social norms of the day by limiting the type of programs women could study, resulting in visionary figures, such as Anni Albers pursuing textiles as opposed to the painterly mediums her husband would go on to be known for.

Bauhaus Girl No. 3 is limited to an edition of 35 (plus five APs) and comes signed and numbered by the artist. The artwork features a solemn redheaded girl perched against a counter in Ke’s signature surrealist style and sizes at 17.7 x 15.5 inches. For collectors looking to purchase, the artwork was produced using mixed-media printing techniques and is available for €720 EUR / $777 USD.
