Gagosian Presents Nam June Paik's 'Art in Process: Part One'

An extensive survey on one of the most influential artists of the past century.

Gagosian unveiled the first part of a two exhibition series of work by the iconic Korean-American artist, Nam June Paik. Remembered as a pioneer of video art, Paik’s mesmerizing installations are influenced by the extensive international background that shaped him — from his birth city of Seoul, to Japan where he attended university, then West Germany where he became an integral member of the Fluxus art movement of the 1950s, to New York City, where Paik further entrenched himself in the avant-garde movements of the 1960s.

In Art in Process: Part One, the gallery presents a diverse range of paintings and video sculptures that span four decades of Paik’s career. Inspired by a variety of global and historical references, such as the Silk Road, Indian sculptures and the advent of television, Paik’s multi-media work serves as a precursor to today’s hyperconnected world filled with mass communication, artificial intelligence and the blurring of artistic disciplines.

The exhibition will be on view at Gagosian’s 555 West 24th Street location until July 22. While the second part in the series will commence at the gallery’s Park & 75 outpost in New York from July 19 to August 26.

In other art-related news, Tom Sachs unveiled two concurrent exhibitions in Seoul.
