BB&M Gallery Presents 'Dream Life'

On view in Seoul until July 2.

BB&M Gallery is in its final week displaying the group exhibition Dream Life. Curated by renowned art critic Dan Cameron, the show brings together five diverse artists who encompass new modes of representation in American painting today. Having exhibited at some of the most prestigious institutions in the US, including LACMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney, the group show marks one of the first moments of exposure in Korea for any of the five artists on display.

Inspired by his Hispanic and Native American heritage, Esteban Cabeza de Baca entwines a number of painterly techniques — from graffiti, landscape elements and iconography from the pre-Columbian era — to reinterpret the language of European landscape painting and abstraction. Somewhat similarly, Alex Dodge, who alternates his time between New York City and Tokyo, draws reference to ancient Japanese techniques, such as ukiyo-e block printing and katazome stenciling process. As a result, each of his vibrant scenes float between analog and digital, real and imagined worlds.

“Grounded in representation without actually being fully committed to its principles,” Cameron said in a statement, each artist challenges traditional genres through a meticulous choice of color, form, texture and gesture. Dream Life is on view until July 2 at BB&M Gallery in Seoul.
