KATSU Releases Swarm of 5,432 Drones into the Metaverse

A unique NFT project where holders work together to create a digital painting to be auctioned.

Following his subversive graffiti collaboration called “OFFKAT Fashion Art Project” with Off-White™ and the late Virgil Abloh, renowned technological artist KATSU now signals his foray into the metaverse with a truly unique NFT undertaking called THE DRONES. Known for his pioneering of drone paintings, the artist continues to address ideas surrounding authorship and human machine relations in this interactive crypto project.

THE DRONES will essentially be the world’s first swarm digital painting. Built in a web 3 meta canvas space, owners of a drone NFT will be able to work together or solo to envision and paint a large-scale artwork which will then be later sold as an NFT at an established auction house. 100% of the sale of the combined digital drone painting will be distributed equally to all of the holders. The NFT project will be launching on the Ethereum Network with minting available in early April.

A total of 5,432 drones will be available to mint. Each one is stylized in a nostalgic 8-bit video game aesthetic that merges graffiti aspects which recalls the artist’s prolific street art background. Moreover, generative poetry will be sprayed across global monuments by the drones in the animations.

“The metaverse is less of a place but a moment of time when people value their digital belongings more than their physical belongings,” said KATSU to HypeArt. In regards to his project, he poses the questions: “How do you use and express these digital things that you own? How are people going to communicate and band together?

KATSU aims to set up democratic system for holders of THE DRONES as they freely render their works and then launch a voting system where they can agree on the final composition for the finished work to be auctioned. Altogether, the project draws inspiration from the artist’s background which encompasses drone painting, sculpture and digital media in a conceptual outlook. Similar to the artist’s visual and digital projects, THE DRONES will act as a public intervention in technology and commercialism that explores themes such as privacy and digital culture.
