Here’s a Preview of the Upcoming Whitney Biennial

The 80th edition returns after pandemic-related delays.

After several years of pandemic-related delays, The Whitney Museum of American Art is gearing to host its long-awaited 80th Biennial next month.

The event was first organized back in 1932 as a way to spotlight the many artistic developments across the art scene in the United States. Since then, it has become one of the nation’s premier exhibitions and has featured over 3,600 influential artists across a number of creative disciplines.

According to a statement by Whitney curators, David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards, the event “is an ongoing experiment, the result of a shared commitment to artists and the work they do.” This year’s edition, titled “Quiet as It’s Kept,” has had a lot to consider as planning initially started before the 2020 U.S. presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the many racial justice protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd.

“While many of these underlying conditions are not new, their overlapping, intensity, and sheer ubiquity created a context in which past, present, and future folded into one another. We’ve organized the exhibition to reflect these precarious and improvised times. The Biennial primarily serves as a forum for artists, and the works that will be presented reflect their enigmas, the things that perplex them, the important questions they are asking,” Breslin added.

“Whitney Biennial 2022: Quiet as It’s Kept” will be go on view from April 6 to September 5, 2022. Check out the preview in our gallery, along with full list of exhibiting artists below.
