Artist Animates Traditional Japanese Folding Screen With Samurai Warriors
Using digital modeling techniques.
Japanese artist Yusuke Shigeta recently installed an animated folding screen at the Chubu Centrair International Airport in Central Japan. Using digital modelling techniques, Shigeta revamped the traditional home furnishing with a moving visual that portrays one of the most notable 17th-century wars in Japanese history: The Battle of Sekigahara.
Shigeta utilized 3D modelling and crowd simulation to create the animation of over 500 various subjects — mainly samurai warriors. Several characters are seen sparring swords or transporting food in and out of the barracks. Moreover, there are plenty of natural details from the region’s historic sites including tall grasses.
The work, entitled Folding Screen of Painted Sekigahara Landscapes, is a part of a series of installations called Culture Gate to Japan that aims to reimagine airports as spaces where travelers can immerse themselves in Japanese culture. Get a closer look at the work by watching the video above.
