Baldur Helgason Creates "Spiritual Paintings for Emotional People"
As part of a new virtual presentation with Richard Heller Gallery.
This past weekend, Baldur Helgason virtually presented a new body of work as part of an exhibition titled “Spiritual Paintings for Emotional People” at Richard Heller Gallery. The works on show feature the Chicago-based artist’s stripe-shirted cartoon character in varying, vivid scenes of the everyday mundane.
Helgason is known for his animation-inspired oil paintings that predominantly serve as self-portraits of the artist. Through this practice of self-portraiture, the artist visually evokes his personal experiences in his unruly compositions that feature cartoonish subjects in varying scenarios. He is inspired by vintage comic strips, mid-century European cartoons, and American cartoon styles such as Betty Boop.
