Ai Weiwei Creates 'Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way' Artwork
A collaboration with DIY store Hornbach.
Ai Weiwei has partnered with DIY store HORNBACH to create a work of art using materials from the store. Named Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way, the artwork is an attempt to democratize art, allowing anyone who visits these stores to build their own version of the sculpture.
The piece itself is constructed from industrial high-visibility safety jackets which are fixed together using zips. This sculpture is then either placed atop a structure of steel tubes or hung from hooks screwed into a wall. In the work, the high-visibility jackets are used to denote security.
Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way also comes with a publication that functions as both an art book and a manual for assembly. The book features a statement from the artist, a conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist and a certificate of authenticity for each homemade art work.
The book and instructions can be downloaded from the HORNBACH website, while all of the items needed to produce a sculpture are available from the retailers stores. Ai Weiwei and HORNBACH also produced a short film about the project, which can we watched above.
