Eight years after its first announcement.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will finally open its doors to the public on December 14, 2020 — a lengthy eight years after its first announcement.

Located in the former May Company Building on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, the Academy Museum was initially scheduled to open in 2017 at an estimated $250 million USD budget but encountered a number of delays, pushing the budget to $388 million USD. Among its features, the museum has the 1,000-seater David Geffen Theater with luxurious red handmade Italian chairs, and the glass Barbra Streisand Bridge connecting the building to architect Renzo Piano’s glass dome structure and its breathtaking view of Hollywood Hills. One of the Academy Museum’s first exhibits will be an “immersive look” at Hayao Miyazaki‘s Studio Ghibli animated films.

Actor, museum trustee and co-chair of the Academy Museum campaign Tom Hanks announced the news during the Oscars telecast. “There is plenty of culture to be found in the City of Angels,” he said during the ceremony, also reminding attendees and viewers that Los Angeles even had a selfie museum. He continued, “But there has never been a museum dedicated to the art and science of motion pictures.”

“We cannot wait to welcome the whole world to the Academy Museum. When our doors open on Dec. 14, our thrilling combination of exhibitions, screenings, and public and educational programs will create unparalleled experiences for movie lovers everywhere,” Academy Museum director Bill Kramer added in a statement.

Elsewhere in art, LACMA will hold its first-ever international Yoshitomo Nara exhibition.
