Artist Jahan Loh Addresses Global Warming Crisis With Japanese Animation
In his latest body of work “Intergalactic Dreams.”
Singapore contemporary artist Jahan Loh recently launched a new series of work at the National Museum of Singapore. Titled “Intergalactic Dreams,” the three-part presentation combines large-scale installation with Japanese animation to encourage conversations about global warming. “Intergalactic Dreams” narrates a possible future for mankind, where rising temperatures and sea levels have resulted in many countries disappearing under the ocean.
“Climate change is very real, evidenced by heat waves this summer all over the world, and people everywhere are experiencing a small taste of what’s to come if we do not act fast to prevent it,” Loh tells HYPEBEAST.
“This body of work is my way of warning the audience that climate change — and the disasters it will bring — will exhaust the earth’s resources in ways we can’t imagine.”
As part of “Intergalactic Dreams”, Loh worked with Yokohama Animation Lab to produce his sub-two minutes traditional cell animation video. The animated clip was all hand drawn in Japan, and takes viewers on an intergalactic mission to search for other viable planets in order for mankind to survive.
“The end is nearer than most people think; with 10 billion tonnes of ice breaking off from Iceland and melting into the ocean, a lot of low-lying coastal cities will face the full force of it,” Loh urges for Earth’s survival. “This body of work is my way of warning the audience that climate change — and the disasters it will bring — will exhaust the earth’s resources in ways we can’t imagine. Something as small and unassuming as strawberries for example, might go extinct in our lifetime.”
