'National Geographic' Announces 2019 Travel Photo Contest Winners

The grand prize winner captured a snowy fishing village in Greenland.

National Geographic has announced the winners of its 2019 Travel Photo Contest, handing off the grand prize to photographer Weimin Chu for his image of the Upernavik fishing village in Greenland. Entitled “Winter in Greenland,” the photo was entered into the “Cities” category and captures the Nordic town’s colorful houses on a snowy day.

“It felt so harmonious. The whole land was covered by white, cold snow, and the blue tint at dusk made it even cooler. But the light from the windows, street lights and the family of three made the world warm again,” Chu said. “I love the contrast and mood of this scene. I was busy taking continuous pictures at that time, trying to capture the best moment.”

Chu takes home a reward of $7,500, along with a post on National Geographic‘s Travel Instagram account.

In addition to “Cities,” photography prizes were also doled out from first to third place in the categories of “Nature” and “People.” Huaifeng Li nabbed first prize for “People,” shooting a picture of actors preparing for an opera show in Licheng County, China. Tamara Blazquez Haik’s striking up-close photo of a griffon vulture took top honors in the “Nature” segment.
