Sun Yuan & Peng Yu Bring Provocative Artworks to Venice Biennale 2019

Shock-inducing installations entitled ‘Can’t Help Myself’ (2016) and ‘Dear’ (2015).

Beijing-born artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu are recognized for their conceptual artworks that tend to be confrontational and provocative. For their latest presentation, the duo installed two large-scale installations that are turning heads at the Venice Biennale 2019 edition in Italy.

Placed near the entrance of the historic Venetian Arsenal is their work entitled Dear (2015) that features a white silicon chair placed inside a plexiglass container. Affixed to the chair is a rubber house that whips maniacally around and blasts highly pressurized air as reported by designboom. The artwork is ostensibly inspired by the imperial Roman chair as well as the one observed from the President Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Another piece is Can’t Help Myself (2016) which features a robotic arm shoveling blood-red liquid inside a cage-like structure.

Both works are part of the 58th international art exhibition entitled “May You Live In Interesting Times.” Get a closer look at Dear by watching the video above and then check out Can’t Help Myself below. The works will be on view throughout the 2019 Venice Biennale which ends on November 24.
