David Hockney Debuts iPad-Designed Stained-Glass Window at Westminster Abbey

London’s royal church gets a new piece of art.

English painter David Hockney has unveiled his new stained-glass window, which was designed on his iPad, at London’s Westminster Abbey. The new window commemorates the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and depicts a vividly-colored natural landscape to reflect the Queen’s “deep affection for and connection to the countryside.”

Hockney opted to create his design — which was inspired by French artist Henri Matisse‘s windows — on an iPad because of gadget’s backlit effect mimics a window. The artist also says that the hawthorn in the window is designed to look like champagne being poured over the bushes. The final product was made in collaboration with stained-glass and craftspeople at Barley Studio.
