Artist’s Conceptual Swing Set Destroyed 10 Minutes into Show Opening

It took artist Sean Matthews two years to create the artwork.

In today’s art mishaps, a mother and daughter were reported to have destroyed an artist’s conceptual sculpture just after 10 minutes into an exhibition opening at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Entitled Fair and Square, the artwork created by Sean Matthews features a large-scale swing set welded to mimic the scales of justice. The women assumed that they can get on the swings and eventually knocked them, as per Pennlive.

Museum director Anne Schwab allegedly confronted the women saying that they could not touch the art. Matthews claims that it took him two years to create the now-damaged piece that was insured for $5,000 USD. He’s currently waiting for a reimbursement. Moreover, details on whether or not the women will pay for the damage has yet to be announced.

View the unfortunate incident above and head over to the Susquehanna Art Museum’s website to learn more about the work that is part of the exhibition entitled “Recycled Play.” In related news, a man was hospitalized after falling into Anish Kapoor’s Descent Into Limbo installation at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal. The man was reported to be OK.
