Ai Weiwei's "Fan-Tan" Exhibition to Be Inspired by His Father
Marking his largest solo show in France.

Ai Weiwei will soon launch his first major solo exhibition at the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM) in Marseille, France. Entitled “Fan-Tan,” the momentous presentation pays homage to the artist’s father and celebrated Chinese post, Ai Qing. A total of 50 artworks will be on display dating back to the early 1980s including two never-before-seen pieces by the internationally-renowned artist. The works are mounted and installed beside pieces from the museum’s own collection, allowing viewers to make comparisons between the art of the east and the west.
“Ai Weiwei is the son of Ai Qing (1910-1996), the famous Chinese poet who discovered the West in 1929 on disembarking at Marseille, on the docks of La Joliette, precisely the spot where the Mucem is located today,” said MuCEM in a statement. “This connection motivated the artist to take us on a voyage through time and his art, which he links back to his paternal lineage. Through the new resonances that emerge in this exhibition, we are able to view Ai Weiwei’s work in a new light.”
“Fan-Tan” will be on view from June 20 until November 12. Head over to MuCEM’s official website to learn more. Following the Marseille exhibition are three new Ai Weiwei shows to all take place in Los Angeles, California this Fall 2018.
