visvim Spotlights Natural Dye Artist Yoshiko Jinzenji in New Dissertation

Exploring the use of bamboo as a dye.

After going in-depth on the art of hand-sketching, visvim has turned the focus onto the practice of bamboo dyeing for its latest dissertation. The new survey looks at the work of artist Yoshiko Jinzenji, with a particular emphasis on her exploration of natural dyes and the role that bamboo can play.

Jinzenji’s use of bamboo as a natural dye began when she was looking for a white dye for an exhibition back in 1994. The lacquer artisan continued to look for potential dyes, while also be inspired by the conventional idea that bamboo was impossible to be used as a dye, Jinzenji decided to try using the plant to dye a cloth. Take a look at images from Yoshiko Jinzenji’s studio above, and head over to the visvim site to read the full conversation with her.
