Streetsnaps: Takashi Murakami

At the artist’s “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” exhibition in Vancouver.

Features

Last week, Takashi Murakami took to Vancouver, Canada to officially open his latest retrospective “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg.” The extensive exhibition held at the Vancouver Art Gallery featured a grand display of large-scale paintings, sculptures and installations that offer a full look at the iconic Japanese artist’s lauded career.

With the opening of the exhibition coinciding with Murakami’s 56th birthday, the artist used the event to show off his unique style. Sporting his signature glasses, Murakami wore a multicolor tentacle print blazer with a matching pair of cropped wide-leg pants accented by a pair of white Virgil Abloh x Nike Air Jordan 1s. But the standout item of his outfit was definitely his octopus plush cap, which was a shrunken version of “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” exhibition’s mascot.

“The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” is currently open to the public up until May 6. Visit the Vancouver Art Gallery’s official website to learn more about Takashi Murakami’s latest exhibition and be sure to follow our Streetsnaps series.
