A Look Into the Life of Renowned Japanese Photographer Nobuyoshi Araki

The latest instalment to NOWNESS’s ‘Photographers in Focus’ series.

Legendary Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki is known for creating arresting images undoubtedly erotic and boundary-pushing. While his work’s signature sensuality speaks volumes on its own, the process behind the final 2D pieces reveals another dimension to the contemporary artist’s creative process and philosophy.

For the latest episode of NOWNESS‘s Photographers in Focus series, we are given a rare glimpse into Araki’s life. The seven-minute short transports us to the heart of Tokyo, amidst the animated energy of the city nightlife and behind-the-scenes of Araki’s studio, where we see the celebrated but often vexed artist in action. In vignettes, Araki recounts some of his most memorable photography shoots, his most alluring subjects and gives a taste of his overall approach to art and life in general. Director Andrea Cossu’s short film paints an intimate portrait of one of the most iconic and prolific artists of our time. Watch the NOWNESS video above and share your thoughts below.
