Daniel Arsham's "Blue Garden" Brings Reflection to Rio de Janeiro

The artist reinterprets a traditional Japanese zen garden.

Following on from the “Lunar Sand” installation in his home city of NYC, artist Daniel Arsham has unveiled his latest immersive sculpture. Popping up in Rio de Janeiro, “Blue Garden” sees the adidas-collaborating artist offer his take on a traditional Japanese zen garden in sand, stone, wood, concrete and plants.

The installation has been presented by the city’s Oi Futuro – an institute dedicated to culture, education, and sustainability — and features petrified modern objects to suggest a contrast between ancient and modern. The sculpture is also interesting due to its vibrant blue color, with Arsham — who happens to be color blind — using high-tech eyewear that allows him to see the hues. The installation is similar to Arsham’s “Hourglass” sculpture, which was part of his ongoing “Fictional Archaelogies” project and was displayed in Atlanta earlier this year.

“Blue Garden” is on display at Flamengo Park in Rio de Janeiro now. For more from Arsham, head to the HYPEBEAST Art Instagram, where we recently unboxed his ‘Future Relic 08’ sculpture.
