"Sea Rambler" Customized Bike by Geoff McFetridge

In the video for his latest project, LA-based artist Geoff McFetridge talks about two different forms of creativity – creative thinking in a purely conceptual plane, and creativity in the form of engineering or problem solving. Geoff is the kind of artist that likes both, and both are on display in his latest project, “The Sea Rambler.” Working in collaboration with Patagonia and Gold Coast Cycles MFG, Geoff conceptualized a fantastical dream machine of a bicycle, and then he actually made it. “The Sea Rambler’s” whimsical design includes features like a drying rack for your wetsuit, a telescope mounted above the handlebars, and a beautiful shortboard and wooden paddle strapped to the cycle itself. The soft sea-blue bicycle was hand painted by Geoff, with intricate detailing elegantly stenciled across Rambler’s entire frame. For Geoff, it was also important that the the bike be fully functional, even though it was a display piece only. So he built it with real parts including a high end crank and wheels that were manufactured in the USA. Geoff wanted the bike to represent the beauty of machinery – to be a champion for the marriage between concept and application. Every design choice was made to draw the viewer in and evoke a sense of intrigue, to get them thinking about every aspect of the bike in their own way. “The Sea Rambler” was never meant to be ridden, but Geoff wanted to make sure it would still take viewers on a journey. Check out the video for a more in-depth look at Geoff’s process.
