'The Movement of Air' Merges Interactive Digital Projections With Dance

Digital mapping that reacts to human interaction, making each scene unique.

Art team Adrien M and Claire B debut their latest acrobatic dance performance, which integrates digital projections on-stage. The hour-long piece was formed last month in France by a trio of dancers. Although we have already seen several examples of digital mapping, this template is different in that the artists employ fully interactive “scenes” that react to human interaction. Thus, the performance is entirely unique, with nothing seen within the set having been animated beforehand. As Adrien shares with Colossal, “This ‘living light’ is produced by video projectors and generated in real time by a set of algorithms. It is a mix of control room operated human interventions and onstage data sensors that outlines a precise writing of motions and generative behaviors. Thus, the images are never pre-recorded for a rigid show on an imposed rhythm: on the contrary, they breathe and move with the dancers and organize a new space for them to explore.” You can watch the full performance above.
