This Ukrainian Artist Fuses Renaissance Paintings and Modern Photographs Together

Is that a forest nymph doing the Walk of Shame?

So often seen frolicking in fantastical Rococo landscapes in the company of fauns and nymphs, or against a backdrop of grand palaces long gone, the characters of Renaissance paintings seem to inhabit another world that is at odds with the grime and humdrum of our modern reality. In a stroke of genius, Ukrainian artist Alexey Kondakov decided to extract these Renaissance figures and place them directly into Kiev’s mundane urban environments in his Art History in Contemporary Life series, thus making them infinitely more relatable. Suddenly, the mythical figures found in works such as Cesar van Everdingen’s Bacchus, Caravaggio’s David and Goliath and William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s Nymphs and Satyr are sharing the same commute as us, trying to sneak out of a one-night stand, or blacked out from too much drink outside a liquor store. Enjoy the amusing compositions above.
