KAWS "Man's Best Friend" @ Honor Fraser Gallery Recap

Illustrious street artist KAWS returned to Los Angeles to present his third exhibition at Honor

Illustrious street artist KAWS returned to Los Angeles to present his third exhibition at Honor Fraser Gallery this past weekend. Titled “Man’s Best Friend,” the exhibition nods at the Abstract Expressionism of the ’50s, executed in the New York artist’s own satirical approach. Consisting of new paintings, drawings and sculptures, the works integrate KAWS‘ known motifs — such as KAWSBob, KAWS‘ iteration of SpongeBob SquarePants — with characters from Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts series, such as enlarged drawings of Snoopy, Lucy and Pig-Pen. Bright, colorful sculptures are juxtaposed against monochromatic renditions, with standout pieces including one of a striking landscape image depicting characters cavorting through a dystopian scene caused by an environmental disaster. Drawing reference from popular culture and its ability to provide both entertainment and addiction, ”Man’s Best Friend” offers a glimpse at KAWS‘ latest philosophy and presents examples of his deftness in delivering both two- and three-dimensional works.
