POW! WOW! Hawaii x Polynesian Voyaging Society "Hokule'a's Worldwide Voyage" Project

Hokule’a is a Hawaiian voyaging canoe that’s navigated without the aid of any modern instruments. The iconic canoe — alongside its sister canoe Hikianalia – has completed nine voyages around the world and this Friday, it’ll embark on a three year expedition, using only the sun, wind, waves and stars to guide them. Continuing to bring awareness to Hawaiian culture and its vibrant heritage, POW! WOW! has teamed up with Polynesian Voyaging Society on an all-encompassing art project. Aiming to beautify the canoes with artwork, but also to educate youth, the project consists of painting Hikianalia’s cabin, Hokule’a's hatch covers and a mural of Papa Mau Piailug — the legendary Micronesian navigator known for his traditional, non-instrument wayfinding methods for deep sea voyaging. View the images above to see work by the kids from the POW! WOW! School of Art, 808 Urban and Mele Murals, along with artists Kamea Hadar, Prime and Estria.
