At first glance, the tiny football jerseys made of cigarette boxes look like something made by a bored kid killing time in detention. But on closer inspection, the intricacies of the pieces become more apparent. Eventually you begin to suspect a trained hand created the jerseys. Artist and creator of the “Post Match” exhibition, Leo Fitzmaurice, is classically trained—as a painter yet has maintained an ongoing project of cigarette box jerseys. The idea came to Fitzmaurice 10 years ago after spotting a wet cigarette pack on the ground in the shape of a T-shirt. Eight hundred packs later, he’s still creating jerseys out of found materials. He’s neither a smoker, nor a rabid football fan, so expect very little bias and a whole lot of craft. “Post Match” runs until August 20 at Cube Gallery in Manchester.
