Last Thursday, a burglar calmly walked into Ecko’s Chelsea gallery and strolled up to the second floor where he proceeded to remove a piece of KAWS work from the wall, roll it up, place it in a carrying tube and walk away. The piece, Untitled (Calvin Klein), is part of a series of the Brooklyn artist’s most recognizable work and is supposedly valued at $100,000. After pieces from the Mona Lisa to Edvard Munch’s The Scream have been stolen in similar fashion over the years, it was only a matter of time that the contemporary street art scene would suffer the blow of high-profile robbery as well.
