Yoshitomo Nara’s first large-scale photography exhibition in Taiwan, All Within the Detour, is currently on view at Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei. Organized by Big Art and the Yoshitomo Nara Foundation, the exhibition presents 162 brand-new works that capture landscapes and moments across Taiwan, Hokkaido and Kōbe Island. This marks a significant expansion of Nara’s creative practice, offering audiences a rare glimpse into his photographic vision beyond the iconic paintings and sculptures for which he is best known.

The exhibition highlights Nara’s sensitivity to everyday encounters, with images documenting fleeting expressions, roadside light and the subtle sounds of wind across the land. Unlike his paintings, which often feature stylized figures, these photographs emphasize direct observation and emotional resonance. Notable works include series that juxtapose urban and rural scenery, as well as intimate snapshots that reflect his personal journeys. Nara himself has described the photographs as rooted in his values, capturing “emotional, historical, and commemorative” qualities that transform landscapes into deeply personal narratives.

Displayed in the West 5 Hall of the Red Brick Area, the 162 images function as fragments of a journey that stretches from the north to the south. While the exhibition highlights the geographic diversity of Taiwan and Japan’s northern frontiers, it also serves as a bridge between the artist’s current sight and his deep-seated memories. The works offer a sense of freedom and warmth that differs from the weight of his traditional art, providing a new entry point into understanding his creative trajectory.

Admission to the exhibition is free but requires a reservation via the Huashan 1914 Creative Park’s official LINE. Yoshitomo Nara’s All Within the Detour exhibition will remain on view until January 25, 2026.
