Jahan Loh Explores Interplanetary Diaspora in 'POSTCARDS FROM SPACE'

Greetings from distant terraformed colonies.

After teaming up with ACU for an immersive exhibition in Chengdu, Jahan Loh returns to Singapore to unveil his latest solo show, POSTCARDS FROM SPACE.

Featuring a new body of large-scale paintings, the center of the piece on an “interplanetary diaspora” concept, Loh artistically envisions a distant future where humans become inhabitants of exoplanets or other celestial bodies. His signature blend of Eastern iconography, pop culture motifs and sci-fi tone is fully embraced in this exhibition, with every painting not only being visually striking but also exuding a sense of unsettling surrealism that feels almost digital-like.

In-line with the predominant space theme, the artworks are all named after actual celestial bodies. In “天宮星:: GLIESE 667CC,” Loh depicts a youthful boy-girl duo clad in vibrant spacesuits with intricate exmbroideries — echoing the blooming landscape that resembles ancient Chinese embroidery art. The sci-fi element is amplified with what seems like a floating spacecraft in the form of graffiti-style words.

Take a look at some of the paintings in the gallery above. Jahan Loh’s POSTCARDS FROM SPACE is available for a private preview at Le Freeport. Visitors must make an appointment beforehand, and the pieces will remain on view until October 18, 2024.
