Brooklyn Museum Celebrates 200 Years with Emphatic Group Exhibition
Featuring over 200 artists who’ve lived and worked in the borough.
To celebrate its 200th anniversary, the Brooklyn Museum is championing creative visionaries across its namesake borough in a new group exhibition organized by Vik Muniz, Mickalene Thomas, Fred Tomasell and Jeffrey Gibson. The latter artist, a Brooklyn native himself, is currently exhibiting a pioneering exhibition of work at the Venice Biennale that challenges the foundation of American mythology through vibrant sculptures, installations and film, drawing from his Mississippi Choctaw-Cherokee heritage.
The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition includes work from over 200 prominent and emerging figures, including Brad Kahlhammer, Nancy Grossman and Josiah McElheny. The institution received 4,000 submissions from artists across the borough. To have qualified, individuals would need to have lived or maintained a studio in Brooklyn over the last five years.
“Our commitment to supporting Brooklyn’s artists stretches back decades, and this exhibition is a continuation of that legacy,” said Sharon Matt Atkins, the museum’s deputy director, in a statement. “With The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition, we’re proud to carry forward that tradition, celebrating the borough’s artistic diversity and honoring the creative voices that make Brooklyn such a vital cultural hub.”
The exhibition will open on October 4, 2024 and run through January 26, 2025. See the full list of participating artists below.
