The "Other" Comes Alive in 'DIALOGUE: I Am Because We Are'
Exploring themes of mutual dependence and symbiosis.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and Korea Arts Management Service present the fifth edition of the Special Exhibition of Outstanding Artists, ‘DIALOGUE: I Am Because We Are’, curated by Hzone founder, Daehyung Lee. Located at Hwigyumjae in Seoul, the show brings together seven artists whose work channel play and poeticism to challenge anthropocentric norms. In conversation with the visual themes of the exhibition, further publication will include interviews between seven contemporary curators and featured artists.
The title draws from Ubuntu philosophy, bringing light to themes of mutual dependence and symbiosis. In a rejection of individualism, à la Descartes, the selection of works seek to expand our approach to “the other” to encompass humans, living forms, and immaterial entities as an ecosystem of beautiful complexity.
The artists of ‘DIALOGUE’ look to contextual belonging as a site of imagination. Seok Hyun Han’s six-foot aluminum lettuce leaf both conform with and reject the grassy path that surrounds it. Jeisung Oh’s “cabinet of curiosities” embodies the richness of primordial soup, with visible textures and ample glazing. Meanwhile, works like “Bye Bye Meat” by Ram Han depict a dream-like chaos of muscles, organs, and tendrils. Additional featured artists include ByungHo Lee, Gyomyung Shin, Hyangro Yoon, and Seulki Ki.
Through Lee’s curation, ‘DIALOGUE: I Am Because We Are’ finds significance in interconnection and relationships across boundaries. “It underscores a critical juncture for humanity: the choice between constructing exclusive barriers or forging inclusive cultural bridges,” says Lee.
Now on view at Hwigyumjae, Seoul, until September 6, 2024.
