Ai Weiwei Ponders on Surveillance Systems in Three New Lithographic Prints

Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has partnered up with JRP Editions to release a set of three new limited edition lithographic prints. Each iteration of Grass Mud Horse features a two-color palette with a medley of surveillance cameras spiraling in-and-out of the composition.
Weiwei is perhaps one of the most subversive and outspoken artists in recent memory. From his middle-finger laden photo series, Study of Perspective (1995-2003), to once covering the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in millions of porcelain seeds — a commentary on the ‘Made in China’ phenomenon and the geopolitics of exchange of the present day — the Chinese dissident uses his practice to critique the global power imbalances in society.
“Ai Weiwei is an inspiration to people fighting against oppression the world over”, said Tirana Hassan, executive director of Human Rights Watch, in a statement. “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with him again and to partner with JRP|Editions to release his very first lithographic editions”.
For the collectors looking to purchase, each iteration of Grass Mud Horse is limited to an edition of 99, measures at 23.62 x 23.62 inches and features a two-color design that is printed with Voirin lithographic press, hand cut on BFK Rives 300gsm paper. The prints will come signed and numbered by the artist for $1,650 USD with a portion of the proceeds going to Human Rights Watch, a New York-based non-governmental organization that both investigates and reports abuses happening across the world.
