The Haas Brothers Reveal Their First-Ever Paintings in New 'Inner Visions' Exhibition

Open through June 8 at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood.

The Haas Brothers — twins Nikolai and Simon — have touched down at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood to pull back the curtain on a new exhibition titled Inner Visions.

Coinciding with their solo show at the Nasher Museum and Sculpture Center in their home state of Texas, this latest showcase sees the brothers’ Accretion technique, one they began developing over a decade ago, surpass its potential. Inspired by the “layered accumulation process found throughout the natural world,” the pair’s earliest Accretion forms consisted of wet clay brushed on dry clay to produce a speckled finish on sculpture; now, the craft takes on new mediums.

Within the exhibition, the brothers put acrylic paint to canvas in a series of their first-ever Accretion Paintings. Using squeeze bottles, the familial duo carefully layered the paint on top of itself over time, creating kaleidoscopic, three-dimensional rings that lean toward the psychedelic. The chaotic yet orderly result is the product of the brothers’ contrasting identities: Simon’s mathematician and Nikolai’s jester. Their new bronze works, which utilize wax to achieve a similar layered finish, similarly find their common ground in tow.

The Haas Brothers’ Inner Visions exhibition will be on view at the Marianne Boesky Gallery, located at 509 West 24 Street, through June 8. Take a look inside above.
