American artist Tschabalala Self and Romanian-born Andra Ursuţa are set to bring their unique sculptures to London’s Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Self’s captivating piece, Lady in Blue, will grace the square in 2026, while Ursuţa’s intriguing creation, Untitled, will follow suit in 2028. Selected from a pool of seven talented artists by the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, chaired by Ekow Eshun, the decision-making process also took into account the preferences of the public, as reported by Artnet.
Self, renowned for her evocative portrayals of women, seeks to pay homage to the contemporary woman of color with her exquisite sculpture, Lady in Blue. Crafted meticulously in bronze and adorned with a striking Lapis Lazuli blue patina, Self’s sculpture exudes a sense of dignity and empowerment. Set to be unveiled in 2026, “Lady in Blue” embodies ambition and purpose as she strides confidently into the bustling heart of London.
Meanwhile, Ursuţa’s enigmatic piece, Untitled, promises to captivate audiences with its mysterious allure. Featuring a life-sized hollow figure mounted atop a horse, shrouded in translucent, slime-green resin, Ursuţa’s sculpture invites contemplation on the complexities of public spaces and the narratives they hold. Scheduled for installation in 2028, “Untitled” serves as a thought-provoking exploration of history and its impact on contemporary society.
As the Fourth Plinth continues its tradition of showcasing innovative contemporary art, Self and Ursuţa’s contributions promise to add new dimensions to the vibrant cultural landscape of Trafalgar Square, leaving a lasting impression on visitors from around the world.
