Jared Brook Explores 'Glimpses of Infatuation' at VILLAZAN Gallery

An investigation of love through intimate portraiture.

Exhibitions

VILLAZAN is excited to announce the debut solo exhibition in New York by American artist Jared Brook, titled Glimpses of Infatuation. Featuring a collection of new paintings, the exhibition will be showcased at VILLAZAN’s New York gallery starting from February 8 until February 28.

Brook’s exhibition introduces ten acrylic paintings on wood that delicately yet powerfully explore stages of passionate love. Through Brook’s unique perspective and diverse compositional techniques, each observer is confronted with figures grappling with palpable emotions of solitude, desire, yearning, and introspection. Acting as voyeurs to these personal scenes, viewers can easily immerse themselves in the inner thoughts of the depicted characters. The paintings exude intimacy, both through the depicted actions and the enclosed perspectives that limit our view beyond the subjects presented.

Speaking on the emotional depth of Brook’s work, Tania Fer remarked, “The depicted figures, from their poses to their penetrating gazes to the tender yet firm rendering of their flesh, compel a dialogue with reclining figures spanning centuries of art history. They evoke a sense of camaraderie among classical figures, yet this time infusing the scenes with a bold and unapologetic queerness. This evident expression might stem from Brook’s challenging adolescence, marked by the suppression of his sexual identity due to the stringent religious upbringing he received from his family in Central Europe.”
