Yukimasa Ida’s ‘DAY ZER0’ Is a Story of Cosmic Connection

The artist engages in a dialogue of time, space and shared existence at Villepin in Hong Kong.

Villepin in Hong Kong presents DAY ZER0, a new solo exhibition by Yukimasa Ida, now on view until March 2025. For his inaugural show with the gallery, the Japanese artist reimagines interconnection across time and space, unveiling a cosmic sense of hope for an ever-evolving world.

The exhibition spans three sections, beginning in the year 30,067, where Ida preserves fragments of a bygone world. Memory and nostalgia are realized through the long, meditative brushstrokes of In Space, while a series of sculptures resemble the likes of spiritual icons from the 20th century. Elsewhere, lush canvases of oceans and mountains reveal nature’s power, as The Ark contemplates the tension between the ephemeral and the eternal. The final act, Zero Hour, makes room for “a moment of rebirth.” Inspired by Courbet’s “L’ Atelier du peintre,” this return to figurative portraiture folds the past, present and future in a sacred celebration of the cosmos.

Building on his past explorations of “Ichi-go Ichi-e,” a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, Ida traces the fleeting beauty of human connection across tens of thousands of years. Against the backdrop of rapid technological progress, this science fiction offers moments of reflection, hope and renewal. In a marriage of technical mastery and conceptual depth through various forms and mediums, the artist examines the wax and wane of identity within the broader context of a shared existence, guiding us all through his celestial journey.
