Post-Pop Relics Go Under the Hammer at Bonhams' Pop x Culture Auction

Featuring work by Os Gemeos, Alexander McQueen, Barry McGee, David Bowie, Karl Lagerfeld and more.

In their embrace of everyday objects, people and places, pop and street art are somewhat of the rebel children of 20th century art movements. Today, the two take center stage at Bonham’s ongoing Pop x Culture auction which celebrates their enduring impact on art, fashion and music. From the early days of graffiti and post-punk scenes to contemporary works, the sale pays homage to the artists and influences that shaped a new era of expression.

Highlights include a striking multi-panel piece by Barry McGee, expected to sell for £15,000 – £20,000 GBP ($19,000 – $26,000 USD), standing alongside a painting by the twin duo OSGEMEOS, estimated at £40,000 – £60,000 GBP ($51,000 – $76,000 USD.) Also on offer are works from David Bowie and Bob Dylan’s lesser-known painting practices. On the fashion front are archival gems including Karl Lagerfeld’s 2014 Supermarket Shopping Basket for Chanel and John Galliano’s 2001 Boom Box Bag for Christian Dior. Central to the sale is Alexander McQueen’s Dante Matador Coat, a cornerstone piece from his career-defining 1996 collection, fetching for £24,000 – £28,000 GBP ($30,000 – $36,000 USD).

The auction runs through November 19 with pieces currently on view at Bonhams New Bond Street in London. For more details on the collection, visit Bonhams’ website.
