The Noguchi Museum Features Artworks Created by Staff in 'A Living Mechanism'

Celebrating the diverse perspectives of its employees.

The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, Queens, New York, will feature an exhibition of artworks created by its own staff in the Museum’s education studio. Curated by gallery attendants Orlando Lacro and Shamysia Waterman, the exhibition aims to showcase the remarkable creativity of the organization’s employees, many of whom are practicing visual or performance artists.

Entitled ‘A Living Mechanism,’ the exhibition celebrates The Noguchi Museum as a holistic work of art and highlights the diverse artistic perspectives of its staff, which continually energize and sustain the institution.

The exhibition draws inspiration from Isamu Noguchi‘s belief in collective effort throughout his career. As the museum was being established, influential figures such as Shoji Sadao and Masatoshi Izumi played significant roles. Even in his later years, Noguchi relied on his right-hand man and carving assistant, Masami Sasao, as well as Priscilla Morgan, his personal manager, who guided important business decisions.

With the goal of reflecting The Noguchi Museum’s mission to explore individual artistic endeavors and creative collaborations, the exhibition’s curation by front-facing staff demonstrates a commitment to staying current and valuing the contributions of those who support the museum’s existence. The conceptual approach presents The Noguchi Museum itself as a sculpture, with its staff acting as instruments that transform the work into a beautiful art piece. This symbiotic relationship between the instrument and the artwork mirrors the indispensable role of the staff within the museum.

‘A Living Mechanism’ is on display until June 15. Across the pond, Destinee-Ross Sutton and her namesake gallery is presenting Khari Turner’s first solo exhibition in London called ‘Solid to Gas.’
