teamLab Heads to Sweden for 'Animal Kingdom' Group Exhibition

Based on teamLab’s concept of Ultrasubjective Space.

teamLab, the interdisciplinary art collective responsible for immersive multi-sensory experiences around the world, is presenting its works in a new group exhibition at the Nordic Watercolor Museum in Sweden titled “Animal Kingdom.”

Participating artists include German illustrator and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717, American artist James John Audubon (1785-1851), Finnish brothers Wilhelm von Wright (1810-1887) and Magnus von Wright (1805-1868), and German artist Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919). During their lifetimes, the artists used their expertise in plants and wildlife to present paintings from a scientific point of view with the aim of documenting the diversity of nature in the age of discovery. Based on teamLab’s concept of Ultrasubjective Space, their works will be presented in the context of the great challenges of today, spotlighting current climate issues and mass extinctions occurring in the animal world.

Artworks from teamLab include “Proliferating Immense Life- Sunrise and Sunset,” “Nirvana,” “Life Survives by the Power of Life II,” and “Flower and Corpse Glitch Set of 12.”

“The screens of works based on Ultrasubjective Space do not become a boundary, blurring the borders between the space of the viewer and the artwork,” writes teamLab. “Because the viewpoint can move, we can walk freely while looking at the image, and by not creating a focus, it becomes possible to expand perspective infinitely. The eye is not guided anywhere, enabling us to view the image with freedom of intent.”

Animal Kingdom will be open for visitation from May 7 to September 3. Take a closer look at the works below and find more details on the group exhibition here.
