Stacy Leigh Plans Her "Escape to B-Roll" in Latest WOAW Gallery Exhibition

Signaling the artist’s debut in Hong Kong.

“Escape to B-Roll” is an exhibition of 10 paintings by Stacy Leigh, a New York-based artist, which is currently on display at the WOAW Gallery in Hong Kong until April 19, 2023. This show marks Leigh’s debut exhibition in Hong Kong.

The paintings in this exhibition were created this year by Leigh during her stay at the WOAW Gallery’s location at 9 Queen’s Road Central in Hong Kong. The paintings in this series were inspired by Leigh’s fantasy of leaving her apartment and moving to a house somewhere away from the noise and chaos of the city. These unplanned and freestyle paintings showcase her imagination and creativity and have resulted in a series of beautiful and thought-provoking works of art.

The paintings in “Escape to B-Roll” feature bright, bold colors and have whimsical titles such as “House full o hoes,” “Bad bish,” and “The life of a drone day 8.” Each painting depicts a quaint house with a unique landscape of lush greenery. These picturesque scenes are created from Leigh’s imagination and depict a world that she wishes to escape into.

The exhibition showcases a sense of suburban calmness, with potted plants, tiny dogs, and cars scattered throughout the paintings. Behind half-drawn shutters, viewers can catch glimpses into the cozy interiors of warmly-lit houses, and outside, the neatly trimmed lawns and isolated cliffs provide the setting for weekend barbecues and picnics on a summer’s day. These works are a testament to Leigh’s imagination, with the paintings representing a perfect world that she has created.

Leigh’s unique style can be seen throughout the exhibition. She imbues her farcical sense of humor into hidden corners of the paintings, such as doormats that read “If you’re reading this, take off your shoes” and “There’s some hoes in this house.” Some of the works in the exhibition are new iterations of Leigh’s “drone day paintings,” which often tackle similar themes of quiet suburban life. However, despite the serene nature of these paintings, there is an unsettling quality to the perfection of these scenes, with their vivid colors and bold brushstrokes, as though at any moment, the arrival of a stranger may puncture the fantasy and bring the peace to an abrupt end.

Overall, “Escape to B-Roll” is a unique and thought-provoking exhibition that showcases Leigh’s talent and imagination. The paintings transport the viewers to a world of tranquility, serenity, and beauty, offering an escape from the chaos and noise of everyday life.
