Keita Morimoto Recontexualizes the Vending Machine in New Print

Made in collaboration with Avant Arte.

All across the world, vending machines offer a brief, albeit overpriced, respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. In the paintings of Keita Morimoto, however, vending machines act as mysterious portals to another world. Always set in a normal backdrop in his native Japan, Morimoto creates dimly lit street scenes that are illuminated by the fluorescent glow of the neighboring lights.

In collaboration with Avant Arte, the Japanese artist is set to release a new print entitled Cityscape. In his latest work, Morimoto bathes an unassuming street in various tones of purple and magenta. The UV pigment print is complemented with phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark silkscreen detailing that radiates the artwork as a vending machine would out and about. “They have always struck me as these strange portals, almost like black holes, that I am drawn to in my day to day,” said the artist in a statement. “Whatever you want, pretty much anything, you can get one in the machines.”

Cityscape is an edition of 35, sizes at 24.4 x 19.7 inches and is printed on 410gsm Somerset Tub Sized Radiant White paper. For those looking to purchase, the print will come signed and numbered by the artist for $892 USD via draw on May 4 at 7am PT.
