Roe Ethridge Unveils ‘American Polychronic’ at Gagosian New York
“Photography is like jujitsu.”
Roe Ethridge unveiled a new solo exhibition over the weekend at Gagosian‘s 976 Madison Avenue location in New York. Entitled American Polychronic, the show coincides with a new monograph of the same name, which maps the photographer’s work between 1999 and 2022. The title of the show “essentially means to do more than one thing at a time,” said Ethridge in a statement. “It’s also a way to describe a cultural notion of time. In the moment, it feels like we are all polychronic by choice or by necessity.”
Whether through commercial work or personal projects, Ethridge conflates art history with ordinary objects and scenes in an attempt to blur the lines between the familiar and the surreal. “Photography is like jujitsu. You’re taking whatever is coming at you, and doing something with it,” Ethridge explained. Rich with texture, each of his photographs reflect the fabric of modern Americana, while paying special emphasis on the “generic Methodist, Southern, middle-class world” which the artist grew up in.
American Polychronic will be on view in New York until February 25. The corresponding book, which includes an interview with Antwaun Sargent and essay by Jamieson Webster, is available to purchase in-gallery and online for $70 USD.
