Takahiro Komuro Imbues the Holy Into Each of His Intricate Sculptures

‘Ground Dragon’ is a new release in conjunction with Avant Arte.

Takahiro Komuro is a Japanese artist who crystalizes his childhood nostalgia into sacred sculptures. Back in 2019, Komoru crafted a series of trippy wooden creatures that inhabited the dim space of Ginza Tsutsaya Books Atrium in Tokyo. Fast forward to the present, Komoru has chosen to explore one of the dragon characters from that past show in a new collaborative edition with Avant Arte.

Ground Dragon is an iridescent bronze sculpture that is inspired by a range of sci-fi movies from Komuro’s childhood. Born and based in Tokyo, the artist grew up near many metalworking factories and curiously developed a penchant for crafting toys with clay, wood, metal and rocks. “The very act of creating sculptures is holy,” said Komoru in a past interview and Ground Dragon fits well within this light.

The sculpture is limited to an edition of 30 and is bronze finished with iridescent paint. Additional details include the artist’s signature engraved underneath the right foot, along with the edition number and “made in Japan” engraved underneath the left foot. Sizing in at nearly a foot high, Ground Dragon will release for $6,356 USD via Avant Arte on May 31.
