Ian Strange Illuminates a Cincinnati Neighborhood Through 'PENUMBRA'

Made as part of last month’s 2022 FotoFocus Biennial.

Following the release of his first monograph, Australian artist Ian Strange has unveiled a new site-specific project entitled PENUMBRA.

Made over a two-month period during the 2022 FotoFocus Biennial in Cincinnati, PENUMBRA comprises of real homes that Strange and his collaborators installed a series of large-scale light works to cast a dramatic lens upon the neighborhood. The first work, Ley Street, presents a massive light on a single home, causing a shadow against the surrounding area. Further on, Walnut Avenue flips the focus by using the home itself as a beacon of light that projects outwardly.

PENUMBRA reflects on the existing visual records and histories of neighborhoods, as well as the effects of environmental and economic conditions on specific homes in the region,” said curator Kevin Moore in a statement. “Strange’s Cincinnati interventions and their photographic output offer interpretive documentation of the city’s domestic history by examining the changing fates of particular neighborhoods, homes, and the populations who continue to dwell there.”

You can learn more about the installation and Strange’s oeuvre in Disturbed Home, which is available to purchase for $57 USD at Damiani.
