Emma Talbot Set to Unveil '21st Century Herbal' at Frieze London 2022

“I see this work as really urgent and contemporary, and the subject something that we really need to concentrate on.”

Frieze London 2022 is right around the corner and there are a number of unique installations that will go on view, including a large herbal-inspired artwork by British artist, Emma Talbot.

From digital billboards to large curtain-like sheaths, Talbot is known for creating floral universes made of text and mythological figures that are partly inspired by her own experiences, while commenting on topics related to nature, urbanism, politics and technology.

For the upcoming fair, Talbot will install a 28-meter-long (roughly 92-feet) painted silk hanging garden titled 21st Century Herbal at the entrance. The artist notes that piece was inspired by medieval manuscripts that describe plants and their properties, from well-known medicinal remedies, toxic plants, as well as pop culture references rooted in little-known botanical facts.

“My work is a way of exploring what it feels to have human experiences, and think and feel emotions, and then cast them into the structure of contemporary issues,” said Talbot in a video interview with Frieze, adding that she wanted this particular project to “feel like walking along through a garden full of knowledge.”

Frieze London 2022 will be open to the public from October 12 to 16 at Regent’s Park. Please visit the fair’s website to inquire into tickets and the full list of exhibiting galleries.
