NANZUKA to Host Monumental "Global Pop Underground" Exhibition in Tokyo

Featuring works by Hajime Sorayama, Haroshi and more.

NANZUKA is pulling out all of the stops for its upcoming exhibition at Tokyo’s Parco Museum. Entitled “Global Pop Underground,” the Japan-based gallery will feature new and archival works from its complete roster of artists including Hajime Sorayama, Haroshi, Keiichi Tanaami, and the late Japanese erotica master, Toshio Saeki. Leading international artists, affiliated with the dealer, will also showcase pieces such as Erik Parker, James Jarvis, Katherine Bernhardt, Javier Calleja, among many others.

The massive presentation will see works that reference traditional Japanese art such as calligraphy and ukiyo-e techniques while drawing comparisons to modern and pop art historical backgrounds from the west like street and psychedelic art. “‘Global Pop Underground,’ while following the above context, as an anti-thesis to the stereotypes of ‘high’ and ‘low’ within the framework of art academism, serves to interactively mix and bring together the explosive and simultaneous outbursts of ‘outsider’ discourse taking place on a global scale,” said the gallery in a statement.

Highlighted works include Saeki’s produce paintings from the 1970s that portray various sexual taboos, the drip-style works of late American artist Joyce Pensato, as well as Todd James’ vivid still lifes that have evolved from his prolific graffiti background. From paintings to illustrations, the exhibition aims to illustrate the incredible diversity of today’s progressive forms of art.

Elsewhere in art, Parra and Case Studyo teamed up on a commemorative MIMA Museum edition of the Amsterdam artist’s high-heeled planter.
