Gallery Weekend Beijing Is the First Major Art Fair to Relaunch in China

Initially postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As quarantine restrictions ease up in China, one of the largest art events in country, Gallery Weekend Beijing, is set to return for its fourth edition this month. A total of 22 galleries and institutions will play host to various exhibitions, public art installations and other programming in Beijing’s 798 Art Zone. Live-streamed events, panel discussions and artist studio tour wills also be virtually accessible through the Gallery Weekend Beijing’s website.

“By bringing local galleries and institutions together, the opening of Gallery Weekend Beijing signals the revival of Beijing’s art scene and offers hope to other art scenes around the world. New to this year’s programme is an expanded digital offering, designed to ensure remote access via a variety of digital channels to visitors around the world,” as per a press statement.

One of the highlights of the fair is a collaboration with Zurich Art Weekend that will consist of an international debate on the challenges and possibilities of worldwide crises. Other discussions include This is me! and Mapping Mindscapes that spotlight high-profile artists, curators, and collectors, as well as a series of performative talks featuring young Chinese practitioners and artists from the Public Sector — a section dedication to outdoor installations.

Gallery Weekend Beijing was initially postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be one of the first art initiatives to relaunch in China since the outbreak. The art fair will now take place from May 22 until May 31.

Elsewhere in art, Ethiopian photographers and artists recently launched a print sale for coronavirus relief.
