The Louvre Spotlights the 'Mona Lisa' for First-Ever VR Experience

Go beyond the glass of da Vinci’s masterwork with state-of-the-art headsets.

Running concurrently with the Louvre’s monumental Leonardo da Vinci retrospective is the historic museum’s first-ever virtual reality experience entitled “Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass.” The immersive project encompasses a seven-minute experience chock full of moving images, sounds, and user interactivity with high-tech headsets.

Aside from viewing layers of the painting invisible to the naked eye, those taking part in the VR experience can also go on a virtual ride on da Vinci’s signature flying machine. The museum teamed up with HTC’s Vive Arts to bring the cutting-edge project to life — the same company responsible for the digital reconstruction of Modigliani’s final studio for Tate Modern’s retrospective on the artist back in 2017 as per Artnet.

The VR experience is just one of a number of the solutions spearheaded by the museum to tackle its overcrowding issue while also reaching a broader audience — roughly 10 million visitors attend the museum yearly. “Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass” is now on view until February 24, 2020. Visit Vive Arts’ official website to learn more.
