The "Museum of the Moon" Tour Brings Giant Moon Replicas to Venues Across the World

A unique creation of artist Luke Jerram.

Multi-genre artist Luke Jerram is giving the “moon” its first world tour for his latest artistic endeavor.

Using highly-detailed imagery from NASA’s Astrogeology Science Center, Jerram has created several 23-foot replicas of the moon to bring to cities across the globe. Notably, the vivid shots that Jerram based his creations off of were taken by a NASA satellite equipped with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. The “Museum of the Moon” tour has already visited public spaces in China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Finland and elsewhere, and comes with a soundtrack provided by composer Dan Jones.

“As it travels from place to place, it will gather new musical compositions and an ongoing collection of personal responses, stories and mythologies, as well as highlighting the latest moon science,” Jerram shares via an official statement.”

“From the beginning of human history, the moon has acted as a ‘cultural mirror’ to our beliefs, understanding and ways of seeing. Over the centuries, the moon has been interpreted as a god and as a planet. It has been used as a timekeeper, calendar and to aid nighttime navigation,” reads a statement posted to the official “Museumn of the Moon” website. “Throughout history the moon has inspired artists, poets, scientists, writers and musicians the world over. The ethereal blue light cast by a full moon, the delicate crescent following the setting sun, or the mysterious dark side of the moon has evoked passion and exploration. Different cultures around the world have their own historical, cultural, scientific and religious relationships to the moon.”

You can check out some shots of Luke Jerram’s “Museum of the Moon” replica above and check out its official promotional vignette below. For more information, head on over to the “Museum of the Moon” website.
