Hiroshima Sugimoto's "Black Box" Exhibit Opens in Madrid

Forty years of beautiful, black and white photographs.

Hiroshi Sugimoto is a multidisciplinary artist who is best known for his large-format photographs in black and white. Sugimoto’s work centers around clashing themes such as life and death, as well as reality and illusion. The Japanese photographer avoids digital formats, looking to traditional methods instead to craft captivating pieces that in a way, closely resemble Ansel Adams‘s monochromatic visuals of the American West.

The Mapfire Foundation in Madrid is currently displaying 42 significant works from the past 40 years of the artist’s career — showcasing pieces from these five series: Seascapes (1980-ongoing), Portraits (1994-1999) Theaters (1976-ongoing) Dioramas (1976-2012) and Lightning Fields (2006-ongoing).

Sugimoto’s “Black Box” exhibition will run until September 24. If interested, you can purchase tickets at Mapfire Foundation’s official website.
